Cool dinosaur facts for kindergarten

New dinosaur discoveries are being made all the time! Paleontologists—the scientists who study ancient life—are constantly unearthing fossils that help us better understand how dinosaurs lived, looked, and survived.

These exciting discoveries show just how different and diverse dinosaurs could be!

Did you know Tyrannosaurus rex wasn’t the only fearsome predator? Here are some jaw-dropping facts about other meat-eating dinosaurs:

  • Velociraptor was quick and fierce—but much smaller than in the Jurassic Park movies! It was only about 1.8 meters (6 feet) long.
  • Spinosaurus was even bigger than T. rex, making it the largest known meat-eating dinosaur.
  • Giganotosaurus, meaning “giant southern lizard,” lived in South America and weighed up to 13 tons!
  • Carcharodontosaurus, or “shark-toothed lizard,” had 8-inch (20 cm) serrated teeth designed to slice through meat.

Carnivorous dinosaurs came in many shapes and sizes. And while T. rex is the most famous, the prehistoric world was full of other powerful predators! Explore more about dinosaurs with a dino book.

Plant-eating dinosaurs—also known as herbivores—were incredible in their way. Here are three fun facts about these gentle giants:

  1. They came in all sizes!
    • Seismosaurus was over 30 meters long—about the length of a basketball court!
    • Protoceratops, on the other hand, was only about the size of a sheep.
  2. They lived in herds.
    • Living together in large groups helped herbivores stay safe from predators.
  3. They had clever ways to protect themselves.
    • Ankylosaurs had armored backs and swung heavy tail clubs to defend themselves.
    • Stegosaurs had bony plates along their backs and sharp spikes on their tails.
    • Triceratops had three sharp horns and a bony frill to scare off attackers.

To fuel their giant bodies, herbivores had to eat a lot:

  • Edmontosaurus could munch through 400 kg (880 lbs) of plants each day.
  • Brachiosaurus needed more than 500 kg (1,100 lbs) of food daily!

Herbivores played a big role in shaping the prehistoric world. By keeping plants in check, they helped maintain balance in their ecosystem.
